David and Goliath

1 Samuel 17:47

👂 Listen to the Story

When the Philistine army sent their champion Goliath — a warrior over nine feet tall — to challenge Israel, even King Saul's bravest soldiers trembled. But David, a young shepherd who trusted the Lord completely, volunteered to face the giant armed only with a sling and five smooth stones. His victory showed that God's power is greater than any obstacle.

"The battle is the LORD's."

— 1 Samuel 17:47

Shepherd Boy

Young David takes care of his sheep in the fields

David was the youngest of eight brothers. While his older brothers were soldiers in Israel's army, David stayed home to watch over his father's sheep. Out in the fields alone, David learned to be brave. He had fought off lions and bears to protect his sheep, and he always trusted God to keep him safe. David also loved to play his harp and sing songs to God.
